Here's What People Are Saying...

Congratulations Paula Edwards on your achievements. My book (This Case of Emotional Rape--www.emotionalrape.org) just came out this year and my company is publishing it. I know the work you're putting in. Whenever I see a sister building her business (especially a writing business), I feel the compulsion to give a pat on the back and a hug. Consider yourself patted and hugged! Keep holding it down and rising to the top. Peace, Jacquetta

My name is La'tonya West, i am 24 years old. I just recently finished writing my first book it is an urban fiction. i am very proud of my work and i feel like i have the potential to be one of the greatest authors out there if i could just get my work out there. most of the publishing companies i have read about charge thousands of dollars to publish a book. honestly i don't have that kind of money so i was hoping to publish my book the traditional way, which i guess is the same as a publishing deal or so i've read where a company pays you for your manuscript. if you have any information that could help me i ask that you will please email me back. thank you.

I'm taking a needed week off, but before I do I want to send out a quick and huge thanks to you for being a part of this year's West Hollywood Book Fair. As one of the organizers of the event, and on behalf of the other organizers, we can't thank you enough for sharing your talents, graciousness and generosity of spirit. It was a beautifully day and it was a thrill to be part of the great literary community we have here in Los Angeles. I welcome your thoughts and feedback (the good, the bad and the ....well you know! It all helps so that we can work on an even better event for next year!). Big heartfelt thanks again- Corey

Hi Paula, good luck on the 25th (and very nice commercial). We will try to be there to cover it in the CV Drum; however, I must admit that I was disappointed that you did not at least put in a token ad in our publication after all that we have done for African-American authors in the Valley. Continued success.

You may remember me by the title of my book due out in a few months time (Life Goal Success). I am looking for a publisher of my second book and I was wondering if you could send me some information? You can check out my website that is now up and running. The site address is www.lgsseminars.com. Let me know what you think. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I'm glad I found you again. Dear Paula, we are saddened that Thursday's show will be your last on ArtistFirst. Our listeners and your guests have no doubt benefited from your wonderful show. We will keep your archives available for sometime to come to be sure anyone that wants a copy will have ample time to download it free. Perhaps in the future our paths will cross again. You are certainly most welcome here, and should you decide to return in the future please let us know and we will see what time slots if any are available. We do wish you the best. Hey Paula, have you decided what you are going to do about Artist First now that Chris is gone? To be honest, I've listened to Blog talk and I'm not impressed. Maybe it was the host but the whole mike thing turns me off cause folks be huffing and puffing on the mike. If you are throwing in the hat with Artist first, I want to know what I need to do to pick up the show myself or continue our co-host thing with the addition of my name.

Greetings Paula, my husband has been incarcerated for over 10 years and has a MAD talent for writing, lyrics, poetry street and romantic verses. I would really like to get his art published it really needs to be shared. It is so raw you can actually feel what he experienced both in and off the streets. His english instructor where he is incarcerated is very interested in his work, in fact he had a visitor claiming to be from a publishing company ask to read a few of his pieces who also feels he can and should be published. The problem is that I don't trust them with his work and suggested he and I work as team to deal with someone legit on the outside. I am working on trying to get his pieces copy written, he has so much work he is remarkable. Would you be interested or could you recommend someone who might be? Its all he really has that belongs to him and it would break my heart to see the prison take control of his work and use it without his input or knowledge. Keep doing what ya doing..love your work! I am located in Sacramento and my husband is outside of Fresno. PEACE, LOVE and LIGHT. Tina Boatwright “Friends”

Paula - Saying that you've been busy is an understatement. Congratulations on your Proclamation! Needless to say, I'm very proud of you for all that you've done and continue to do! You're accomplishing some great things, Paula, and it does my heart good to see someone so determined to increase literacy appreciation as much as possible. It's good to know that you're on commercial radio now. You truly have a knack for the airwaves, so it's great that you'll now get an ever wider audience with which to share your skills and personality. Looking forward to getting Searching To Find Myself (is that you on the cover?) - but you know I need an autographed copy. Just let me know where to send my money, and make sure you inscribe it "To My Best, Best, Best Friend Ever In Life"...;) Literary Focus looks great, and I can't wait to get involved with it. I'm thinking I can send you a new poem every month as part of a recurring poetry column, similar to what Essence Magazine runs in each issue. Speaking of which: yes, that was me you saw in the May issue. They re-printed "I Say," which is actually the first poem in Songs In Search Of A Voice. The book is still doing very well, and I'm very happy about its success. #2 is on the way early next year, so you know I'll be keeping you updated on that. I'm still involved with The Lady Oya Foundation, but on a lesser level as of late. I've been so busy with Urban Echoes that I only have time to do so much at once anymore. I'm looking forward to getting the ball rolling again soon, though, because the cause is very important and needs as many people actively involved as possible. By the way, I finally took your advice and started my own MySpace page, but I couldn't add you as a "Friend" - I started it as a MySpace Music page (featuring some spoken word renditions of my poems), and I got a message stating that you don't accept Friend Requests from bands...can't you make an exception for me, sweetie? Talk to you soon, MJ

Hi Paula. You don't know me. I just want to tell you that your book was so good! I was crackin' up when Chancey was telling Kaylin about the roaches at his house and than one of them had a joint in his mouth with his feet propped up on his pillow!!!!! That was good writing to say the least. Like everybody else, I felt bad at the end, but black people need to wake up and know that bad decisions lead to bad outcomes, so even though I was hurt we lost Chancey, at the same time, I understood. Please tell me you have more work coming soon!! I would love to hear from you when your not busy and I would LOVE to have my book autographed if that's possible. Thank you so much for giving us something good to read! Yours Truly, Elaine

Hi Paula, it’s Jackie Hampton again. I wrote you back in December and told you I bought you book, The Last Bad Decision and that I would be back to give you my opinion. Oh my oh my, your book was one of the best “hood” books I have read in a looooong time. Understand that I an older woman with two hard headed boys of my own. The story of the last bad decision had me laughing, crying, and angry. You paint the picture so well about L A living that I could see myself in Chancey and the sister’s room. I yelled at Chancey like he was my own son when he took his behind up to that gym to do you know what! I think a lot of men can learn from your book. I pray that it is doing well. You had two copies left in a store called Underground books in Sacramento. Bring more! You should do a book signing there. You have gained three new fans: me and my two sons. Let me know when Searching for myself comes out. I can’t wait to read that one too. Keep doing your thang. One love, Miz Hammy

Paula...Not often do you find a writer who has complete understanding of, and an effective portrayal of her characters she writes about. You've done just that. I finally read the book "The Last bad Decision" and could identify with some of the struggles, the emotions, the pain and the victory that one would face in the different stages of life. Chauncey was the character that stole my heart as I got into his mind, his thinking. I realized that he represented majority of the African American brothers that are still oblivious to the true steps to living your dreams...you know ...what it truly takes. Yet it broke my heart to see him go in the end, still full of promise, purpose and passion, barely tapped because of one bad decision. Love It. Love It!!!!! Never stop writing, for your pen is the instrument that unlocks the soul, mind and spirit of your readership. Much love.

Paula Edwards: I was wondering if you know of any African American mystery authors who are located in the Bay Area? I am interested in booking mystery writers for our 2007 Summer Reading Program (SRP) for adults and/or teens. The SRP theme this year is mystery. We are booking authors for programs in June-July 2007. Specifically, I am looking authors who are interested in appearing at more than one San Mateo County Library. We can do the same format as the one you did at EPA Library, i.e. Writers Workshop and Book Signing in 2005. Also, we can discuss an honorarium. Sincerely, Sereptha Strong

Just wanted to send some love and remind you that I met you at Hilltop Mall in Richmond, Ca. I don't usually read urban fiction but you and Curtis Alcutt were there so instead of spending my own money on what could have been a potentially boring book, I begged my mother to buy it for me instead, that way I'd still have money for something real good. I must say, damn! That was one of the best books I've ever read! And I've had to read a lot. I apologize for underestimating you! I can't wait for the next one. Oh God, I laughed, I cried my heart broke at the end. I passed it around to my cousins. I come across so many Black authors and I want to be supportive but some of the stories just aren't very good so I tend to stay away from what we call 'the ghetto books'. They seem to all tell the same story: someone sells drugs, someone ain't got no daddy, a girl gets raped, becomes a prostitute, etc. I get so tired of that. It's good to tell the story but a lot of authors don't bring anything new to the table. Again, congratulations on a fantastic book, you have a fan for as long as you write!

Girl why did Chancy have to go out like that? And Tia lived man that's fucked up but why did they even let Rondell at the funeral if I was Setchi I probably would have went off on his jealous hearted but. After he paid for the funeral of course. Man and Kaylin aint never did nothing to nobody man. I cried and cried the closer I got to the end I cried more. I was visualizing myself as Tia. I think Chancey was really trying to change. I am glad I got through your book before I got bombarded with homework from school. That is definitely a must read. I loved it and I hope my book comes out just as good or better wouldn't hurt LOL!!!!!!!!! J/K but I do love this book and now that I am done I want a autograph PEACE OUT!!!!!!!!!! BY THE WAY I WANT YOU TO BE MY MENTOR I AM TRYING TO BETTER MYSELF I WANT TO BE LIKE YOU WHEN I GROW UP LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a great book Paula I'm not lying. I have to give you props on how well you put this book together. I just finish your book tonight and thought to shoot you an email before I went to bed. Let me know on your next installment. Here’s a copy of my Amazon review: “The Last Bad Decision” is a very good book. One of the reasons that I like it so much was how the author first introduced me to Chancey. Starting from the first page or should I say the first chapter you get the idea of the struggle and the whereabouts of the main characters dealing with the complexity of his life in Watts. Chancey Walker will first appear to be controlling and quick tempered but he’s really caring and down to earth. He's totally focused on the upbringing for his naive, teenage sister Setchi, and his best friend Kaylin. Rondell who is the local drug dealer and long time friend of Chancey is the total opposite. He strives for money and the finer things in life whom he also employs Chancey as his right-hand man. In this book you see that Chancey does have his share of woman but his heart truly belongs to Tia, his childhood sweetheart. Tia provides encouraging words and thoughtful gestures and is also an inspiration to Chancey which will slowly dwindle his loyalty to Rondell and fade his desires on the street to a cleaner and meaningful lifestyle. The thought of Rondell loosing his money making side-kick leaves a bad taste in his mouth, which brings a flood of problems that ultimately result to tragedy. The story that Paula provides here isn’t really a love story but Chancey's struggle to survive in the world. The one thing that I had to question about was Rondell’s obsession with Chancey. I understand that as long time friends you have to protect and look out for each other and probably show each other love time to time but Rondell’s way of handling his friendship towards Chancey was over the top, wanting him to be by his side all time and knowing his whereabouts 24/7. His actions made me wonder about his sexuality but throughout this book he lets you know he loves his women and his money. The street slang wasn’t at all difficult for me to read. I rather found it entertaining because I would mostly hear it around me but rarely read it in front of me in black and white and for those who are not familiar with it might find it a bit difficult to understand. Paula Edwards will have you fall, and care for Chancey. She has done an excellent job introducing her characters- the scenes were well painted and the characters are well thought out. The format of this story moves from scene to scene regarding the different characters and by doing this she gives you just enough to hold you over until it unravels toward the end. “The Last Bad Decision” touches on everything from teenage pregnancy to irresponsible mothers. It’s a real wake up call for our youths in these predicaments. I highly recommend this book base on its powerful message.

Girl I like this book so far! Man I even got people from the office who want to support you. A couple of my co-workers took the name of your book down to buy it. One lady said once she buys it she wants you to sign it just so that she can say she knows you. I just opened it today and I am already on chpt 4. I start school tomorrow so hopefully I can finish it before we start getting too much homework. I was looking at the cover of the book and I was like this dude looks hella familiar and come to find out it's Travis. I like it. I am going to go buy it for two of my friends as gifts. Hello Paula, I am one of the top one thousand reviewers on Amazon.com. I took a look at your website and it was very appealing compare to some others out there, and reading your Bio was very informative for those who are curious, such as myself, as to who the author is. After looking through your website I thought it was great that you were able to do your own publishing, love to hear stories like that. I took a look at your book 'The Last Bad Decision!' through Amazon, of course, and by reading the description and number of other reviews of the book it seems really good and something I would love to read. The main character Chancey seems to be a interesting person in the story. I would gladly like to review it.

Please put this in your guest book page. I am a fan of your work Paula. Chancey was a hero in my opinion and to make him "his character" go out in such a manner, was a mistake. Your readers cared about Chancey more than anyone else in The Last Bad Decision. I know I did. I can't see your next book "sequel" being as hot without him. Don't get me wrong, this is no disrespect to you. All I am saying is The Last Bad Decision was good because of Chancey. I can not imagine reading something else without him. This is just an opinion of mine and should not be taken personal in no kind of way. I will still support you and I am still a fan. I'm just hurt over the loss of Chancey. I would like this posted so others can see cuz I'm sure they dig me and what I'm saying. I love you anywayz and I am still a fan.

Hi Paula, it was so nice speaking to you this morning. I'm so happy that you're excited about Young Diamond Books. I wanted to send you the book jacket so you can see for yourself what Ride Wit' Me and Young Diamond Books are all about. We have the catchy book cover to grab the teenager’s attention and the entertaining story to hold it. But NO curse words or explicit violence or sex. I feel the story is so entertaining that our young readers won't even notice. I'm so excited about this project and feel blessed that you are trying to push it. I spoke to my partner and we’re actually going to print on Friday. I came up with 10 questions about important issues in the story for the back of the book so that the kids will have a forum to discuss topics in their schools. I definitely hope the two programs you're involved in will participate in helping for the outreach of our young kids through Young Diamond Books. I appreciate your support and you'll be one of the first people to get a copy of Ride Wit' Me!! Thanks again. Joy King

Paula, thanks again for the opportunity to do the Riverside event. I was sick all week and got sicker when I got there (108 degrees and no tent). Lily was there for a little while and left before our workshop. Charles was there and stayed the duration. (I left right after our workshop, too much heat for my blood pressure.) The event was much smaller than last year, with only 1 food vendor and no sales, for me and Lily anyway. Don't know if Charles sold anything or not. Good for you, you didn't bother on this one... At any rate, I appreciate the opportunity to be seen again. There were about 8 people at our Authors Speak. They had lots of questions. Got the newspapers, thanks. The CD was broken. Hi Paula, how are you! I hope things are going according to God's wishes for you. I'm sorry I have not talked with you in a while...it's just been hectic. Anyhow, the mag is out. I will send you a complimentary copy if you send me your address. They are slowly getting to bookstores. I know Zahra's in LA already has them and Carol's in the Bay area as well. Can you please inform the rest of the group? I can't send a copy to everyone except you. Unfortunately, we did not use the agent's piece due to space. I hope everyone enjoys it. A peom dedicated to Paula. She's sensual, sexy, and sensational like chocolate. But I could never talk to her like that So I try to keep our conversations professional. But she can sense that she’s becoming my new inspiration. And I like her because she keeps it real when she speaks about my situation. Wish I could tell her how I really feel. To her I’m intimately connected in a spiritual kind of way. I feel a closeness that can’t come from touching and sensations words can’t begain to say. She’s all woman I can’t deny. But I know I must resist even though I'm drawn by her beauty, intelligence, and independence. Sometimes I wonder what she’s really like. And if she will ever let me begin to see the real woman that hides behind JustWrite Publishing, the company. Maybe I’m better off not knowing. I can’t miss something I’ve never had. paula, you have truly resurrected my soul, So I stand erect and forever glad. Friendships like this are hard to come by. And although I wish it were more, you’ve exposed a side of me to myself I’ve only seen because you’ve opened the door.

Good morning Paula. This is your cousin. The book was well written. I saw certain aspects of every character in me. Tia's goofiness, Rondell's persuasive ways and cold-heartedness, Tomika's jealousy, Rosie's free-heartedness, Rhonda's innocence, Nikki's stubbornness, Kaylins mamas-boy pride and brotherly love, Niecey and Lisa's over protectiveness, Officer Woods' empathetic ways, Setchi's naiveté, and of course Chance's compassion and aggressiveness. My wife and I took turns reading the book to each other before we turned in for the evening. It took about four days to read. It's a true page turner. I feel that this book made our relationship stronger. (My wife's and mine) We left a message on your answering machine hope you liked it. I was moved when/how Rhonda made Rosie and Rondell realize her (Rhonda's) "real" existence. The book took me for a loop on several occasions. I will be waiting for the movie, sequel, or your next book/project. I'm waiting to let my daughter read it when she turns 12. Yes I said 12. This book reminds me so much of my life growing up, of course my scenes took place about an hour away from LA. I almost felt that you were describing events that took place when we were growing up. Hope to see you Saturday. With much Love, Respect, and Admiration,Kijana Redd.

Hi Paula. I met you at UC Davis at Black Family Day. I was the african american lady wearing the Anne Klein watch that you said you liked. I just wanted you to know that I read your book. I finished it this morning. I started reading it Saturday night and I couldn't put it down. You are a good writer who knows how to hook the readers. I hated that Chancey's mother treated him that way. It's sad to know that it is a lot of mothers out there like her. I felt sorry for him and his sister. Tomika made me mad throughout the whole book. Ronnie got on my nerves too because I didn't like the way he went after Tia in the end. The police officer put a smile on my face. We need more of 'em like him. Tia's mother was so funny. I liked Tia and Carla too. The whole book was just good. I am glad I bought it. I will also buy your other book when it comes out. :)

Paula, The Last Bad Decision is so well written. I am so proud of you! You really captured the characters to where I felt like I knew them personally. I felt so bad for Chancey and Setchi and stayed angry with Nikki. I hope the book helps more people realize that people should not be judged by what appears to be poor judgment, but that their life choices may be all that they know or are exposed to. Your book really succeeds at grasping the inner struggles that you go through to stay on track. I wish it gave me answers about how to overcome the struggle through Chancey. I guess it's different for everybody and some never do.

I consider myself an avid reader, and your book was easy for me to read. It wasn't a lot of unnecessary talk to bore you. However, I have a slight complaint. I feel that letting 'Ronnie' run free after causing a mass of destruction amongst so many of the characters, to me, hurt the story in my opinion. Everything was fine up until that point. I was rather disappointed with the ending. Other than that, the characters were brought to life and could be identified from their dialog which I thought was excellent. It showed that you put a lot of time in creating the characters in your book. I would also like to point out you’re your book has a powerful message to our youth that should not go unheard of. My problem is that I would hope our youth gets it and not glamorize the fact that you can get away with murder! Be blessed.

You have gained a few new fans here in the city of Brooklyn. I have never been to California in my life, but your book was so well written that I could actually smell the tainted air in Watts. I was right there with Ronnie and Chancey in front of the gym. I was kicking it in the room with Setchi while we waited for Chancey to get home. Gurl, it was me who told Chancey to grab Tia's hand and walk away when Tomika tried to start shit! THAT’S HOW REAL THE LAST BAD DECISION WAS! I didn't want to finish it!!!!!! Now that I'm done, I'm stuck and looking stupid. Keep ‘em coming!

I ordered your book through Amazon. It didn't come in the amount of time it said, but that ok cause it was worth the 2 extra days! I just knew Rondell and Chancey would battle it out in the sequel. I'm mad at that! Why did Chancey have to die!!!! This book was good to the bloody end. Now I'm sitting here biting my nails as I wait on Searching to Find Myself. (waiting impatiently...) I dropped you a line in your email box. Please keep me up to date on upcoming projects. Signing off, A fan for life.
